After last week’s West of Scotland Cup victory, it’s a return to league action this weekend for The Buffs as Glasgow side Petershill FC make the journey to Buffs Park in what is both sides’ 11th match in the WOSFL First Division.
Petershill FC were founded in 1897 and boast a history littered with success, most notably 5 Scottish Junior Cup wins dating from 1912 until 1956, including a 1-0 victory against Irvine Meadow in front of 77,000 fans at Hampden Park. “Peasy” have also won the West of Scotland Cup 5 times with their most recent major honour coming in the form of the West of Scotland Cup back in 2007. Petershill play their home games at the very modern Petershill Park, a ground which will be visited by The Buffs in the closing stages of the season.
Managed by former player, Steven McNeil, Petershill have had a respectable start to this league campaign which currently has them sitting, 1 point and 3 places above The Buffs, in 7th place. After a superb start to the season, which seen them earn comfortable wins away at Irvine Meadow, Thorniewood and Ardrossan Winton Rovers, Peasy have hit the buffers in recent months with only 1 win from their last 8 matches, losing 4 and drawing the remaining 3, conceding 17 goals in the process. Key players for Peasy would include the likes of captain Ross McCabe, who has over 300 appearances for the club and this season’s Petershill top scorer Dom Morgan who has been ever present for the club so far this season. Last season the Buffs came out on top in both bouts between the clubs including a memorable 2-3 away victory which The Buffs played with 10 men for a good part of after captain Ben Lewis was shown a red card and a more comfortable 3-0 win, including a Mark Lamont brace, when Peasy visited Buffs Park in late January. Mark will be hoping he can have an equally good time as he did during last season’s fixtures against Petershill which seen him score 3 goals against his former club.
Kevin Kelly will be looking for his team to convert their positive cup results into 3 points in the league, against a Petershill side that they would leapfrog with a win at the weekend. A league win, however, is something The Buffs have not managed for over 2 months now, a record the team will need to end soon if there is any aspiration of being in and around the promotion spots come the end of the campaign.
