TRIBUTE: Our Founding Father-Robert Muirhead

In 1899, at the Abbey Green, Robert Muirhead was the spearhead in the founding of Kilwinning Rangers which has grown into one of our towns most important institutions. Robert began playing for the club when it was formed in 1899 and featured right through to 1906.

As part of the Hall of Fame celebrations, we’ll see Mr Muirhead taking his rightful place amongst our first batch of inductees. With permission from his family, the club were able to mark Robert’s resting place and fully acknowledge him as the Founder of Kilwinning Rangers. A small ceremony, where a club official unveiled the plaque, was held with Robert’s family present.

By placing this plaque at Robert’s graveside, anyone who passes will be able to quickly recognise someone who undoubtedly deserves to be celebrated throughout the town.

Chairman Colin Evans found this to be a fitting tribute to the man who was there at the very beginning.

“It’s important the club recognises the people who came before myself and the committee who work tirelessly to run our great club. Without Mr Muirhead there would be no Kilwinning Rangers. With the incredible efforts Lee has put in with the Hall of Fame, this is a fitting way to pay tribute to someone who put the foundations in place to allow us to have a club like this today.”

A huge thank you goes to Quinn Memorials of Kilbrinie for providing the plaque.
